Women Giving for Spartanburg Grantees

2011 Grantees

The following organizations were funded in 2011.

Glenn Springs Academy

WGFS awarded a grant of $35,000 toward the "Arts in Motion" (AIM) program designed to strengthen the emotional well-being of adolescent boys who currently reside in a group home setting. 

 

American Red Cross

WGFS awarded a grant of $25,000 for The “Be Ready” Program, which is a new and creative approach to fire prevention and preparedness for at-risk, low-income senior citizens through the provision of 2,000 preparedness tote bags and the installation of smoke detectors.

The Charles Lea Center

WGFS awarded a grant in the amount of $35,000 for the "Empowering Independence" program which is a multi-faceted initiative to enable individuals with disabilities and special needs to live more productive, self-reliant lives.

  

Big Brothers Big Sisters

WGFS awarded a grant in the amount of $25,000 for the "Hispanic Youth Mentoring Outreach" program which is designed as a structured one-to-one mentoring program for this underserved population group in Spartanburg County.

Miracle Hill Ministries

WGFS awarded a grant in the amount of $30,000 for the "Learning Center Program of the Homeless".  This grant will provide a full-time instructor and literacy software for the learning center in a homeless shelter.

 

Family Connections

WGFS awarded a grant in the amount of $47,000 to the "Teaching Toddlers and Their Mothers to Take Them to College" program which includes all the supports that move people out of generational poverty by preparing high poverty at-risk teen mothers and their children for successful lives.  

 

Partners for Active Living

WGFS awarded a grant in the amount of $25,500 for "Trains on the Trail" which will create and install a permanent educational scavenger hunt on the Mary Black Foundation Rail Trail.

 

Spartanburg Parks Commission

WGFS awarded a grant in the amount of $43,000 for the Tyger River Play Park.  WGFS funds will be used to purchase equipment and construct a toddler playground on the new 9-acre environmentally-themed play park in the center of the 140-acre Tyger River Park complex.

 

Habitat for Humanity

WGFS awarded a grant in the amount of $32,500 for the "Women Build" program which will construct a home for a deserving low-income family, as well as train hundreds of local women volunteers in construction skills and engage them in hands on construction experience, increasing their confidence and self esteem. 


2010 Grantees

The following organizations were funded in 2010.

Ellen Hines Smith Girls Home

WGFS awarded a grant of $40,000 to hire a full time position to focus intense services on improving the family dynamic.

Family Connections Literacy Program

WGFS awarded a grant of $47,779 to support a Parent Coach Interventionist to help at-risk parents and their children develop a stable and effectively functioning family environment.

Glenn Springs Academy

WGFS awarded a grant of $30,000 to support the Glendale Environmental Mentoring Program to improve the physical and mental health of at-risk boys residing at the Academy.

Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve

WGFS awarded a grant of $37,500 to support the Garden of Hope and Healing, which will be a place of escape for those facing life-limiting illnesses, offering respite for both patients and caregivers.

Hope Reach

WGFS awarded a grant of $29,874 to equip The Wiggle Room for autistic children, which will allow children with autism to develop core strength, coordination, and confidence while learning to enjoy activities that can be shared with family and friends.

Middle Tyger Community Center

WGFS awarded a grant of $43,500 to hire an Adolescent Family Life Care Case Manager to provide intensive services to young women to help them reach their educational goals, avoid repeat pregnancies, raise healthy children, and increase internal and external assets for their families.

Spartanburg Interfaith Hospitality Network (SPHIN)

WGFS awarded a grant of $25,000 to support the Weekend Life Skills Project which provides tools to help homeless families become more independent and self-sufficient.

The United Way of the Piedmont

WGFS awarded a grant in the amount of $25,000 to expand the outreach of the Imagination Library, an early childhood literacy program that helps better prepare children for kindergarten and first grade by eliminating the reason many children do not read - lack of access to books.

The following organizations were funded in 2009.

Boys & Girls Clubs

WGFS awarded a grant of $25,000 for a pilot program. “Family PLUS” which will support and empower families of Boys & Girls Clubs members to participate more fully in their children’s lives.

The Charles Lea Center

The Charles Lea Center was awarded a grant of $25,000 to start a wellness program, providing exercise, nutritional training and cultural opportunities for clients with disabilities and special needs.

Greater Saint James Temple

There is currently no Soup Kitchen serving the Inman, Campobello, Gramling, and Landrum areas. WGFS's grant of $25,000 will fund a Soup Kitchen to feed the hungry in northwest Spartanburg.

St. Luke’s Free Medical Clinic

Twenty-one percent of Spartanburg County residents are uninsured, many of them elderly.  WGFS's grant of $27,000 will enable St. Luke’s to address the growing demand for services with additional staffing.

Citizen Scholars Program

Citizen Scholars enables bright but disadvantaged youth a chance to graduate from college. A grant of $27,600 will support a Parent Empowerment Program to foster trust within Citizen Scholar families.

Healthy Smiles of Spartanburg

Nationally, 51 million school hours are lost each year to absences due to toothaches. WGFS granted $31,000 to Healthy Smiles for licensed staff to screen school-aged children in need of free dental services.

Adult Learning Center

About 25% of all residents in Spartanburg County are functionally illiterate. WGFS granted the Adult Learning Center $63,240 for “ALC To Go,” mobilizing literacy training for those lacking transportation.

SAFE Homes - Rape Crisis

Safe Homes received a grant in the amount of $35,000 to help acquire the site for a new emergency shelter and to meet the requirements of a challenge grant of $125,000 issued by the Mary Black Foundation.

REACH Upstate (formerly the Family Care Council) and Girl Scouts of SC/Mountains to the Midlands

Family Care Council and Girl Scouts of SC received a grant in the amount of $30,000 to expand educational opportunities, update marketing materials, and provide comprehensive programming to those at risk for teen pregnancy.

SOAR Academy

SOAR Academy received a grant in the amount of $30,000 in support of therapy services provided for the 2008 school term.  The services include physical, occupational, and speech therapists who work closely with teachers and parents to identify the individual developmental and educational needs of the students in school and at home.

Bearden-Josey Breast Cancer Center

The Bearden-Josey Breast Cancer Center received a grant in the amount of $30,000 to support the purchase of the most accurate and precise breast cancer diagnostic equipment which will support a program that will also offer the Multidisciplinary development of care plan, the development of large and inclusive breast cancer support groups, and patient access to psycho-social therapy.

Mobile Meals of Spartanburg

Mobile Meals of Spartanburg received a grant in the amount of $30,000 to help provide a full-time nurse for the Mobile Meals Nursing Ministry.

Spartanburg Terrace Tenants Association

Spartanburg Terrace Tenants Association received a grant in the amount of $15,000 to support the READ Drama Literacy Block program.  READ Drama is a program that provides literacy skills development to help youth excel academically and increase their performance on achievement exams and standardized tests.

Christmas in Action Spartanburg

Christmas in Action Spartanburg received a grant in the amount of $10,000 to provide emergency repairs related to safety or weatherproofing issues on homes of the elderly and disabled in Spartanburg.
